Mountain Top Report 16th September 2007
The return to the Arch after many years proved to be a testing but very enjoyable Enduro described by several riders as a proper enduro. Although the entry was not as big as hoped the riders who did enter ensured that there was competition in each of the categories.
The expert category only had 8 starters. First place went to David Brick (Knighton) while David Cadwallader (Oswestry) and Steve Ethelston (Oswestry) were second and third. Local riders Martin Jones (Machynlleth) and Calvin Williams (Lampeter) finished in fourth and fifth managing to stay clean and were not a long way off in the test times. Byron Davies (Aberystwyth) and Aled Williams (Lampeter) were sixth and seventh. For Byron this was his return to the expert category and only lost time on the last lap.
The O/40’s category had nine starters all of which completed the event. The event was won by Neil Williams (Brecon) followed by Brian Collins (Ystradgynlais) and Gareth Davies. Neil Williams recorded the second fastest test time of all the entries. The other finishers who stayed clean were Adrian Evans (Ystrad) and Arwyn Jones (Lampeter).
The clubman category had 14 starters 12 of which finished the event although only the top 5 managed to stay clean.
Local rider Lewis Cutter (Tregaron) won the category and set test times fast enough to compete at the top of the expert category. He was followed home by clean finishers John Jones (Machynlleth), Myles Rosser (Lampeter), John Hunt (Llanarth) and Chris Larkin (Alltwallis).
Mark Sandford after setting the second fastest test time on the second lap had to retire after his rear tyre came off the rim during the second test. Despite an extra effort to continue he had to retire!
The Sportsman category hosted the return of Nick ‘The Trophy Hunter’ Elder after a few outings in the Clubman categories. The steering damper on his KTM meant he was serious about ‘competing’. Owain ‘6 bikes’ Peckover decided that a new KTM 300 was the way forward after trying every other bike made by KTM but his decision not to fit a steering damper paid off as he now has spare money to buy a G.P.S. in the hope that he can find the end of his next event. The sportsman category found some of the climbs to be very difficult and as a result only 6 actually finished the 3 laps.
This category was won by Wayne Thomas (Lampeter) followed by Kelvin Evans (Talgarreg) and Andrew Davies (Lampeter). The rest of the finishers were Michael Williams (Lampeter), Nick Elder (Plwmp) and Roy Jenkins (Lampeter)
